Do you need your Red Cross Lifeguard certification recertified? The Daviess Co Family YMCA offers a Lifeguarding Recertification Course that includes a recert in Lifeguarding with CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. Those needing recertification must already currently hold a valid lifeguard certification through the Red Cross that will expire before the recert class or has expired/will expire within 30 days of the class date.

ONLINE LEARNING:

Upon registration, participants will receive a link via email to complete the online learning portion of the course prior to the in-person portion of the class. The online portion MUST be completed before the first day of the in-person class session in order to continue the course. There are no exceptions. Participants must complete the 6-hour online learning with a score of 80% or higher on the final online test. Since this is a recertification course, the Red Cross has now created opportunities for participants to test out of certain portions of the online learning which would decrease the time it takes to complete it.

PRECOURSE:

Those interested in signing up for this course must pass the precourse at the beginning of the first-class session which includes:

1. Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Jump into the deep end and totally submerge, resurface and swim 150m using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Goggles are allowed). Then maintain your position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs; swim 50m using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Participants cannot stop and must do this continuously until completed.

2. Timed Event: Start in shallow end, swim about 15-20m where a 10-lb brick is placed within 7-10ft in depth; surface dive to retrieve the brick, return to the surface and swim back to the starting point while holding the brick at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Place the brick on the deck and exit the pool without using the steps. Must complete this within 1 min, 40 seconds and cannot use goggles. (Precourse Training Help Sessions are available upon request via dcymca.org).

TO BECOME RECERTIFIED:

To successfully pass the course in its entirety and recertify as a Red Cross lifeguard, you must complete the online blended learning with a minimum score of 80% before the first in class portion, pass the precourse testing on the first day, attend the entire in-person class days, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and assessments and pass all 3 of the final written exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent. (The exams are multiple choice).

COST:

$110 (This cost includes a $25 nonrefundable fee for cancellations or dropouts within 1 week or more of the course. No refunds will be given for cancellations under one week from the course date nor if the participant does not pass both parts of the precourse or any of the test portions).

Not sure if your skills or endurance are where they need to be to pass the lifeguard training prescourse? In a small group or individual setting, an instructor can help prep you for the precourse by evaluating and instructing you on stroke technique and endurance training specific to passing all of the entry requirements for lifeguard training. This is by appointment only. A precourse class can be held anytime depending on the availability of the instructor. You can request this training help below.  Assistance may not be available if requested too close to the desired lifeguard course date.

Here is what the precourse entails:
